Bulldogs Close Homestand With SEC Network Battle Against Troy
March 06, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Riding an impressive 14-game winning streak, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (18-3) close out a seven-game homestand with an SEC Network showdown against the Troy Trojans (11-11) on Tuesday Night at Nusz Park.
First pitch for the nationally-televised broadcast is set for 6:30 p.m. CT. Mark Neely and Jenny Dalton-Hill will have the call for the Network's first softball broadcast of the 2017 season.
Along with the national broadcast, it will be "Taco Tuesday" at Nusz Park, with free tacos going to the first 150 students. Fans will also have the chance to receive free t-shirts for every Bulldog strikeout and run scored, as well as a chance to win free tickets to a concert at Rick's. Tuesday night is also a Hail State Rewards Pick-Up Day, as Hail State Rewards members can pick up their prize store purchases.
The Bulldogs will look to stay perfect against the Trojans, as MSU holds a 7-0 advantage in the series. State took the last meeting to the tune of 5-2 on Feb. 8, 2013 in Starkville. Tuesday night's meeting will be the first between MSU sixth-year coach Vann Stuedeman and third-year Troy coach Beth Mullins. Mullins served as an assistant under Stuedeman from 2012-14 at MSU.
Stuedeman's squad is riding a 14-game winning streak that currently stands as the fourth-longest streak in school history. MSU is coming off a 7-0 showing last week, including sweeping the Bulldog Slamboree by defeating both Central Arkansas and Samford twice, while defeating UMass once.
The tournament victory marked the third non-conference tournament that State claimed first place in this year. The Bulldogs also captured the February Freezer title at Nusz Park two weekends ago and earned the top spot at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge (Feb. 16-18).
State's success has been heavily fueled by its strong play in the circle through the first 21 games of the 2017 campaign. As a staff, the Bulldogs sport a 0.98 ERA, which ranks third in the SEC and sixth in the NCAA. Senior lefty Alexis Silkwood has been the staff's leader, holding a perfect 9-0 record and a 0.70 ERA that stands sixth in the league and 21st nationally.
Recently, Cassady Knudsen has elevated her game to another level, highlighted by a lights-out showing against Alabama State last week. The junior tossed a career-high 10 strikeouts and threw her second-career no-hitter. On the year, Knudsen is second in the SEC and third in the nation with allowing just 2.33 hits per seven innings. She is also fourth in the conference and eighth in the NCAA with 11.1 strikeouts per seven frames.
The Bulldog offense has ramped up in recent weeks to complement the MSU pitching staff, hitting .305 with 30 doubles, eight triples and 12 home runs on the year. Leading the charge has been junior Bevia Robinson, who paces the squad with a .464 clip, 26 hits, 15 runs and a .516 on-base percentage. Her batting average currently stands ninth in the SEC. She has also flashed her supersonic speed, stealing 13 bases, which is good for fourth in the conference.
Tuesday night's game will be the final tune up before the Bulldogs begin SEC play. MSU will travel to College Station, Texas, to face Texas A&M next week, March 10-12, to start the 2017 conference slate. Friday night's contest is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be featured on the SEC Network +. The final two games will be broadcast nationally on the SEC Network, with first pitches set for 2:30 p.m., on Saturday and 2 p.m., on Sunday.
