Knudsen Tosses Second-Career No-No As MSU Run-Rules ASU
March 02, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – From the moment she tossed her first strikeout to the final out of the game, Cassady Knudsen was locked in and dominant, throwing her second-career no-hitter as Mississippi State (13-3) run-ruled Alabama State (3-10) on Thursday night, 10-0.
The crowd at Nusz Park was treated to a pitching clinic from the junior, as she tossed a career-high 10 strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work while only walking two batters to capture her first victory of 2017.
"I did not realize it until probably about the fourth inning and then I really did not think about it because I just threw how I always threw," Knudsen said. "I was just pitching how I always do."
"Anytime you can throw a no-hitter it is exceptional," MSU coach Vann Stuedeman said. "Cassady [Knudsen] had 10 strikeouts in five innings, and we made five exceptional plays behind her. I know Katie Anne Bailey made a diving catch out of the catcher's position which was a great play. Calyn Adams was the perfect person to have at second base on that last play. A slow roller there, and Calyn has a great release.
"Cassady did a great job and it is fantastic when you can throw a no-hitter."
On the flip side of the ball was the red-hot MSU offense, who collected 10 runs on 13 hits on the night, its second-straight game with at least 10 hits.
Seven of those hits came in the opening frame, as the Bulldogs unleashed eight runs to start off the night. The eight scores are the most in an inning since State tallied eight against Northern Kentucky on Feb. 7, 2014, a 12-1 MSU victory.
Bevia Robinson led things off with a base hit, moving her hitting streak to seven-straight games. After a stolen base and a Kat Moore single, Robinson made it safely to third and was brought home by an ASU throwing error to open the scoring.
Reggie Harrison would step up next and launch a triple to center, bringing home Moore. From there, the Dogs would tally six more runs behind five hits, with two of those being triples.
Up 8-0, State tacked on another run in the second frame as Katie Anne Bailey earned her second hit of the night to bring home Sarai Niu. The final run of the game came via freshman Lindsey Williams, who had an RBI groundout in her first-career at-bat, scoring Robinson to make it 10-0.
Williams was not the only Bulldog to make her collegiate debut on Thursday night, as Montana Davidson also earned her first-career at-bat. Davidson singled to the ASU shortstop in the third to tally her first-career hit.
Leading the MSU hit parade were the bats of Moore, Harrison, Sarai Niu and Bailey, as each player tallied two hits on the night. Nine total Bulldogs tallied hits on the night.
The Bulldogs remain at home this weekend, welcoming Samford, UMass and Central Arkansas to town for the 2017 Bulldog Slamboree. State kicks off weekend play on Friday, March 3 with a 3 p.m. CT first pitch against Samford before facing UMass at 5:30 p.m.
