Bulldogs Back Home Tuesday Against Alcorn State
March 06, 2017 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After picking up a solid road victory to open conference play on Sunday, the 14th-ranked Mississippi State men's tennis team (8-3) now returns home as the Bulldogs host Alcorn State (4-11) for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
The pair of matches are slated for 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. CT. Due to the threat of inclement weather, Tuesday's matches could be moved indoors to McCarthy Gymnasium. For the latest updates, follow the Bulldogs at "HailStateMT" on Twitter.
"We're excited to be back home this week and play in front of our great fans," head coach Matt Roberts said. "Tuesday is another opportunity to improve and get better as a team and our guys will be focused for what's ahead. We want to play solid tennis tomorrow against Alcorn and continue momentum heading into Thursday against Alabama."
Following Tuesday's doubleheader, the Bulldogs will host its first SEC match of the season against Alabama (6-8, 0-2 SEC) at 3 p.m. CT.
Last time out, the Bulldogs dug deep to overpower No. 49 Auburn on the road as MSU earned its fourth consecutive win over a ranked opponent. The Bulldogs received four wins in singles play to down the Tigers as No. 4 Nuno Borges, Niclas Braun, Giovanni Oradini and Strahinja Rakic all earned wins for the Maroon and White.
As it has been all season, Sunday was another dominant performance for sophomore Borges. The fourth-ranked singles player proved his mantle after hammering the former SEC Player of the Week and 59th-ranked Max Hinnisdaels in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-1. The victory for Borges was his 12th ranked win of the season, while improving his overall singles record to 20-3 on the year.
Fellow sophomores Braun and Rakic have also been heating up for the Bulldogs in dual-match play as both continued their four-match winning streaks on Sunday. For Rakic, the win was a special one as it marked his first match-clinching victory of the season. Also vital to MSU in singles play is freshman Oradini, who improved his record to 6-1 on the season after a straight-set win against his Auburn foe.
Tuesday's opponent Alcorn State comes into the match having won four out of its last six matches. The Braves last match was a 4-0 win over Alabama A&M back on Feb. 25. Alcorn State and MSU have faced one common opponent, Tulane, with the Braves going 0-2.
Who To Watch For Alcorn State
Kert Kilumets is on an eight-match winning streak for the Braves as the junior leads Alcorn State with an 8-3 record on the season. The majority of his matches have come at the No. 2 position as he has earned an 8-2 mark on the spot.
