INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Success continued for a pair of Bulldogs on Friday in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, as No. 1 seed Nuno Borges and Giovanni Oradini each picked up a pair of ranked victories during Day 3 action.
"It was an unreal day for our guys," MSU coach Matt Roberts said. "I'm so proud of how they competed and battled back when they needed to against some very challenging competition. We look forward to tomorrow's competition, which will be huge tests for them."
State's top-seeded Borges, ranked second nationally, got the Bulldogs started off on the right foot with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Notre Dame's Alex Lebedev, who is ranked 104th nationally, in the main draw Round of 16.
The All-American Bulldog junior continued his dominant tournament performance with another victory against ranked opposition, as he downed sixth-seeded and 30th-ranked Emil Reinberg of Georgia 6-1, 6-4 to advance to Saturday's semifinals where he will face UCLA's Martin Redlicki at approximately 1:30 p.m. CT. The Bruin star is ranked 24th nationally and holds the tournament's No. 5 seed.
Borges has now reached the semifinals of two of the last three major collegiate events, coupling this weekend's showing with his advancement to the 2017 NCAA Singles Championship semifinals.
In the consolation Round of 16 Friday, the MSU sophomore Oradini registered his eighth victory versus a ranked opponent this fall by soundly defeating ninth-ranked William Bushamuka of Kentucky 6-1, 6-1, the highest ranked win of Oradini's young Bulldog career.
Later in the day, Oradini continued the success with his second ranked win of the day, defeating No. 101 Walker Duncan of Georgia, who was the tournament's No. 13 seed coming in, in a 7-5, 7-5 thriller. The sophomore lefty now has nine victories against ranked opponents this fall.
With the win, Oradini moves on to Saturday's consolation semifinals where he will meet Ole Miss' Tim Sandkaulen, who is ranked 85th nationally, at approximately 1:30 p.m. CT.
