INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – After going 2-1 in singles on Wednesday, Mississippi State replicated that on Thursday with a pair of victories at the inaugural Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
MSU's top-seeded and second-ranked Nuno Borges continued his stellar play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kentucky's Ryo Matsumura, who is ranked 42nd nationally. The All-American Borges will retake the court in Friday's Round of 16 at 1 p.m. CT against No. 104 Alex Lebedev of Notre Dame, with the winner moving on to the quarterfinals later Friday.
In the singles consolation draw Thursday, Bulldog Giovanni Oradini bounced back from his main draw setback with a solid 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Michigan's Runhao Hua. The sophomore lefty will face yet another ranked foe in Friday's consolation Round of 16, as he will take on ninth-ranked William Bushamuka of Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. CT.
State's 67th-ranked Strahinja Rakic dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 6-2 decision to 13th-ranked Constantin Schmitz of Tulane—the tournament's No. 7 seed – in the main draw's second round Thursday.
In doubles, MSU's seventh-ranked doubles tandem of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey competed in a Round of 16 thriller under the lights Thursday night, dropping a back-and-forth affair to Baylor's second-seeded duo of Will Little and Johannes Schretter, ranked 19th nationally. After splitting the first two sets, Braun and Foshey fought tooth-and-nail in the supertiebreaker, eventually dropping a 13-11 decision and the match 1-6, 6-2, 1-0(11).
