MSU’s Borges Advances To Semifinals At USTA Pensacola Futures
November 17, 2017 | Men's Tennis
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Nuno Borges never trailed in his most recent victory on Friday in the quarterfinals of the USTA Pensacola Futures.
Mississippi State's Borges, the 2017 ITA National Fall Championships singles champion, cruised to an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory against former Rice standout Jonathan Chang (ATP 1619) of the United States in the tournament being held at the Roger Scott Tennis Center.
Combined with his six-match win streak in ITA competition, the Porto, Portugal, junior is currently riding a nine-match win streak overall.
With the win, the fourth-seeded Borges moves on to Saturday's semifinal round, where he will face seventh-seeded and former Southern Cal standout Emilio Gomez (ATP 626). Gomez owns valuable Grand Slam experience, playing in the French Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon in 2014 in addition to being a member of Ecuador's Davis Cup team. Gomez reached the semifinals by defeating Florida freshman phenom Duarte Vale, who is also from Portugal, on Friday.
Next Up For MSU…
After ending competition in Pensacola, State will turn its attention to a challenging spring dual match schedule, which opens on Jan. 14 at home against UAB.
