PENSACOLA, Fla. – A hot fall campaign continued for Mississippi State's Nuno Borges at the USTA Pensacola Futures on Thursday.
The All-American and 2017 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year earned another impressive victory in the tournament held at the Roger Scott Tennis Center, this time against an opponent with Grand Slam experience in Round of 16 action.
Borges, the 2017 ITA National Fall Championships singles champion, earned a hard-fought 6-4, 6-2 victory against Patrick Kypson (ATP 895) of the United States, who qualified for the 2017 U.S. Open in August. After taking a back-and-forth first set 6-4, Borges fell behind 2-1 in the second set. However, the Porto, Portugal, junior rallied to break Kypson at 2-2 and cruised to a 6-2 victory to take the set and the match.
With the win, the fourth-seeded Borges moves on to the quarterfinal round, where he will face former Rice standout Jonathan Chang (ATP 1619) on Friday.
State's Giovanni Oradini's tournament run came to a close on Thursday, as he dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 6-1 decision to Ecuadorean Davis Cup team member and former Southern Cal standout Emilio Gomez (ATP 626), who is the seventh-seeded player in the tournament.

After returning from Pensacola, State will turn its attention to a challenging spring schedule, which opens on Jan. 14 at home against UAB.
