State’s Oradini Advances To Round Of 16 At Pensacola Futures
November 15, 2017 | Men's Tennis
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Giovanni Oradini's success against ranked opponents continued on Wednesday in the USTA Pensacola Futures at the Roger Scott Tennis Center.
The Mississippi State men's tennis sophomore earned a solid 6-4, 6-1 win against the United States' Govind Nanda (ATP 1251), who is also a Top-150 junior in the world.
In the first set, Oradini and Nanda battled back-and-forth until Oradini was able to break a 3-3 deadlock to pull ahead and eventually take the set. The second set was much different, as Oradini took control from the start and cruised to a 6-1 set two victory.
Oradini's win sets up another tough test for the Rovereto, Italy, native, as he will take on seventh-seeded and former USC standout Emilio Gomez (ATP 626) of Ecuador in the Round of 16. Gomez is a member of the Ecuadorean Davis Cup team and has Grand Slam experience, competing in the qualifying draws of the U.S. Open, French Open and Wimbledon in 2014.
MSU's fourth-seeded Nuno Borges won his first-round match on Tuesday, setting up a battle against 2017 U.S. Open qualifier Patrick Kypson (ATP 895) on Thursday.
Next Up For MSU…
After returning from Pensacola, State will turn its attention to a challenging spring schedule, which opens on Jan. 14 at home against UAB.
