Pichaikool Leads MSU After Day One at Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate
October 09, 2017 | Men's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Peng Pichaikool paced the Mississippi State men's golf team through Monday's opening two rounds at the Jerry Pace National Intercollegiate, shooting 3-under-par to sit in a tie for ninth.
Â
PIchaikool's solid day helped guide MSU to the clubhouse in 10th position. The Bulldogs shot a 286 in Monday's opening round at par-70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Club and followed with a 288 in the afternoon.
Â
"I am proud of how the guys finished the first round today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "I thought we would carry that momentum into the second round, but, unfortunately, we did not do the little things very well, especially to finish our second round."
Â
Pichaikool started Monday off strong, shooting a 3-under 67 in round one. He then finished at even-par in his second round to finish the day tied for ninth.
Â
Freshman Cameron Clarke was MSU's next best player, shooting rounds of 73 and 72 to finish tied for 35th with a 145.
Â
Sophomore Garrett Johnson shot 7-over-par to finish tied for 43rd, and junior Taylor Grant and senior Ross Bell each shot a 148 to head to the clubhouse tied for 50th.
Â
Host Alabama leads the field after shooting a 16-under 544 on the day.
Â
The Bulldogs will look to jump in the standings when final-round play tees off at 8 a.m. CT Tuesday.
Â
"This is all part of our learning process," Smith said. "Tomorrow is an important round and a character day, so we need to come out and stick to what we know and that is our brand of golf."
