TULSA, Okla. – Mississippi State All-American Nuno Borges opened the 2017 ITA All-American Championships' main draw, and his 2017-18 MSU campaign, with a solid singles victory Thursday. Bulldogs Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey also got their doubles season together off to a great start with a first-round comeback triumph in doubles.
Borges, ranked No. 2 nationally and the No. 2 seed this week in Tulsa, notched a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 victory over Georgia's 101st-ranked Walker Duncan, a qualifier, in Thursday's first round. Borges won the last four games of the match to clinch, overcoming a second-set break at 5-3 down. The junior All-American Bulldog will meet 33rd-ranked Eduardo Mena of Tennessee Tech – also a straight-set winner Thursday - Friday in the second round at Noon.
In doubles, the seventh-ranked State duo of Braun and Foshey, a 5-8 seed this weekend, battled back from dropping the opening set for an inspired 1-6, 7-5, 1-0(10) victory over 23rd-ranked Jefta Kecic and Lasse Mushcheites of North Florida. Braun and Foshey were down 7-3 and also faced match points in the deciding supertiebreaker. The Bulldog tandem will take on Virginia Tech's 31st-ranked pair of Mitch Harper and Henrik Korsgaard in the round of 16 Friday at 1 p.m. The Hokie team, a qualifier, upset the nation's No. 20 team Thursday to advance.
In State's other main draw action Thursday, sophomore sensation Giovanni Oradini fell in his quest to upset the nation's top-ranked singles player, Ohio State's Mikael Torpegaard, dropping a tough 6-1, 6-4 decision. Oradini will meet Kentucky's ninth-ranked William Bushamuka in first-round consolation action Friday at 10:30 a.m.
"We had a very solid day overall," MSU head coach Matt Roberts said. "Nic and Trevor really battled to come back from a set down, and 7-3 in the supertiebreaker, to win their match. They are so good at making adjustments in the moment and that's a big reason why they are succeeding at this high level. And Giovanni gave a fantastic effort against the nation's No. 1-ranked player. He is having a great fall so far."
