STARKVILLE, Miss. – One of the most prestigious tournaments of the college tennis season will boast five members of the Mississippi State men's tennis team, including the No. 1 overall seed in singles.
Top-seeded Nuno Borges leads four other Bulldogs into the inaugural Oracle Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Fall Championships, being held Nov. 1-5 in Indian Wells, Calif. State's seventh-ranked doubles tandem of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey also highlight the doubles draw in the tournament.
The second-ranked All-American Borges earned one of the tournament's two wild card spots. He will open play on Wednesday, facing Texas' 86th-ranked Leonardo Telles at 1:45 p.m. CT. Borges was the 2017 SEC Player of the Year and a semifinalist in the 2017 NCAA Singles Championship.
Bulldogs Giovanni Oradini and Strahinja Rakic each earned automatic bids into the 64-player singles field by being finalists in the ITA Southern Regional Championships. Oradini's first match this week will come against the No. 8 seed Johannes Schretter of Baylor—ranked 40th nationally—on Wednesday at 1:15 p.m. CT. Rakic will open up by battling Gustavus Adolphus' Mohanad Al Houni at 3:30 p.m. CT. Al Houni qualified for the tournament by taking the ITA Oracle Cup Division III crown.
Oradini has been on fire thus far in the fall, touting an impressive 10-4 record with seven of those victories coming against ranked opposition. After opening the fall slate 2-3, Rakic has won his last five matches.
In doubles, Braun and Foshey earned an at-large bid into the 32-team doubles field after finishing runner-up at ITA Regionals for the second straight year. The Bulldog duo will start competition Wednesday as well, taking on ITA Oracle Cup champions Gilad Berman and Kevin Konfederak of Georgia Gwinnett at 5:30 p.m. CT.
State's five combined athletes in the tournament ranks second-most out of all programs represented in the Oracle ITA singles and doubles fields. Florida leads the pack with six players, while Georgia joins MSU with five in the event.
The Oracle ITA Fall Championships replace the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which was held for many years in Flushing, N.Y., through last fall.
