Maroon Wins Final Game of Scrimmage Series in Jackson
October 29, 2017 | Baseball
JACKSON, Miss. – In Mississippi State baseball's final scrimmage of the weekend at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Maroon pulled out a comeback win to beat Black 3-2.
Maroon's three-run third was enough to overcome an early 2-0 Black lead in a game that went final after five innings.
To start the third, junior Elijah MacNamee reached on an error and took second on a wild pitch. Sophomore catcher Marshall Gilbert followed with a walk. With no outs, freshman Jordan Anderson lifted a ball to deep right center field, which junior Jake Mangum followed, but it popped out of his glove and MacNamee scored on the error.
With runners on second and third, freshman Owen Lovell drove a double to right center to score Gilbert and Anderson and give Maroon the lead.
Black's two runs came in the top of the second inning when freshman James Basham hit an RBI-single to score sophomore Dustin Skelton and freshman Josh Hatcher.
Senior J.P. France started for Maroon, giving two innings and allowing two runs on as many hits, while striking out two batters. In relief, senior Jacob Barton and junior Spencer Price threw three no-hit innings to finish the game.
Freshman Zane Stephens took the mound to start for Black and allowed all three runs, all unearned. Sophomore Cole Marsh replaced him in the fourth inning and pitched two innings of shutout relief.
Maroon's win concluded the weekend for State's three-scrimmage series in the state capital, as Maroon won the series two games to one.
MSU baseball will be back at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson for the three-game Maroon-and-White World Series on November 17-19.
