Maroon Evens Jackson Scrimmage Series Saturday Night
October 28, 2017 | Baseball
JACKSON, Miss. – A sixth-inning sacrifice fly from junior Hunter Stovall proved to be the difference in Maroon's 6-4 win against Black Saturday night in the second scrimmage of Mississippi State baseball's weekend in Jackson.
"I thought it was a really good night for us," head coach Andy Cannizaro said. "I saw some really good things, I saw some really aggressive at-bats, I saw some really nice plays defensively, I thought the overall product was better today than it was last night."
Tied at four in the bottom of the sixth, Stovall lifted a fly ball to right field, deep enough to score freshman Jordan Westburg from third base, after he had tripled.
Black struck first, as Jake Mangum led off the game with a single, took third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice from junior Luke Alexander.
Maroon replied with a run in the bottom half in the same fashion. Stovall knocked a leadoff single of his own, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice from Elijah MacNamee.
Sophomore Marshall Gilbert gave Maroon the lead in the third, driving a single the other way to plate Tanner Poole after he had doubled.
The home Maroon added to their lead in the fourth inning as Westburg scored again, this time on a wild pitch. Three batters later, MacNamee plated Tanner Poole with an RBI-triple, the first of three MSU triples on Saturday.
After a scoreless fifth, Black tied it back up with a three run sixth. A leadoff single from Mangum, a couple of errors, a Dustin Skelton double and a triple from Josh Hatcher put Black back even at 4-4 with Maroon.
The tie didn't last long as Stovall's sac-fly brought the go-ahead run home, and Maroon didn't look back. MSU played a full seven innings, and Black scored again in the bottom of the seventh as Rowdey Jordan doubled-in fellow freshman Jordan Anderson.
Batting cleanup, MacNamee powered the Maroon lineup, going 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs.
Junior Konnor Pilkington started on the mound for Maroon, and pitched two innings, allowing a run, unearned, on one hit, while striking out three batters. Senior Cole Gordon was solid in relief of Pilkington, striking out five in three innings of shutout relief.
Sophomore Trysten Barlow toed the rubber for the final two innings and allowed three runs, all unearned, on as many hits.
For Black, senior Jacob Billingsley struck out four batters while allowing two runs through three innings. Sophomore Ethan Small and senior Trey Jolly also allowed two runs each in relief of Billingsley.
The Bulldogs will play their final scrimmage, a rubber match between Black and Maroon, Sunday at noon at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. Admission is free.
