STARKVILLE, Miss. — In a game scheduled earlier this week to benefit victims of Hurricane Irma, Mississippi State welcomes Nebraska to Humphrey Coliseum on Sunday.
Tip is set for 1 p.m., and the game can be heard on the MSU radio network (check local listings), TuneIn and HailState.com with Neil Price and Richard Williams on the call. In addition, the game can be seen on periscope with the @HailStateMBK twitter account as Bart Gregory and Bob Carskadon will handle the broadcast.
The Bulldogs and Huskers have met just once, with MSU claiming a 69-66 win in 1995 at the Ford Far West Classic in Portland, Ore.
"It is a good cause, and also it is a great thing for both of our programs to play against each other in a game that doesn't count as a win or a loss, but both can benefit from playing a game this early against each other," MSU coach Ben Howland said. "I thought it was a great idea, and playing it down here kind of brings more attention to the fact that we are close to where these events happened."
Representatives for the MSU Student Relief Fund and Salvation Army will be located in the arena collecting monetary donations to benefit Hurricane Irma relief efforts. Admission to the game is free, and doors will open at noon with standard basketball game security screening procedures in place.
"What I love is we should have a great crowd," Howland said. "I know that when you mention the word 'free' around here, that gets a lot of people excited, just like it would anywhere."
Mississippi State returns four starters and 10 lettermen from last year's 16-16 squad. Back is leading scorer and All-SEC standout Quinndary Weatherspoon (16.5 points), along with Lamar Peters, who drained 59 3-pointers a year ago en route to earning SEC All-Freshman honors.
Nebraska is coming off 12-19 campaign under sixth-year coach Tim Miles.
"They have a bunch of new players that weren't there last year. They're good," Howland said. "They are much improved. They have a very good point guard. It's a Big Ten team; that's what is great for our guys."
After Sunday, MSU returns to the Hump on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in his final exhibition game of the year against West Florida. The season opener is slated for Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. against Alabama State.
