MSU Women’s Tennis Ranked 24th In First ITA Ranking Of 2017

STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the start of the spring slate just a couple of weeks away, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its initial 2017 nationals rankings Wednesday, with one Bulldog women's tennis player in the top 30, a State duo ranking in the doubles top five and the team ranking in the top 25.
MSU's team came in at 24th in Wednesday's rankings after finishing a stellar 2016 season 23rd. MSU was a mainstay in the top 25 last season with its highest ranking coming at 21st three times, which was the second-highest ranking in program history. State reached the NCAA Second Round as a team for the second consecutive year and fifth time all-time. Guided by head coach Daryl Greenan, MSU went 18-9 for the year, its second-most single-season triumphs ever. State also finished 7-6 in the powerful Southeastern Conference (the seven wins were a program best) and reached the quarterfinals of the SEC Championship for the second year in a row.
After competing in two of the three majors of the collegiate tennis season held during the 2016 fall season, senior Jasmine Lee came in at 27th in the singles rankings Wednesday. Named MSU's first-ever All-American in singles in 2016, Lee composed a record of 4-3 this fall, capturing the Flight 1 crown at the Furman Fall Classic. Ranked as high as ninth nationally last spring, she was a first-team, All-SEC selection and reached the NCAA singles quarterfinals, the first Bulldog ever to do so.
The MSU tandem of freshman Lisa Marie Rioux and Lee came in at No. 5 nationally in Wednesday's doubles rankings. It is the highest ranking by an MSU doubles team since 1989 NCAA Doubles Champions Jackie Holden and Claire Pollard ended the that season ranked No. 1 in the country. Lee and Rioux posted an 8-1 record in their first semester together, with five wins coming against ranked opponents and a quarterfinal appearance in the main draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
State opens the 2017 dual match season Jan. 22, hosting UAB at 1 p.m. at MSU's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. Prior to the opener, selected Bulldogs will compete in the TCU Invitational Jan. 13-15 in Fort Worth, Texas.
