
Bulldogs fall to host and 14th-ranked Michigan to cap #ITAKickOff Weekend.
No. 23 MSU Falls At No. 14 Michigan In ITA Kick-Off Weekend Final

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – In the final match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, the Mississippi State women's tennis team (2-1) fell to 14th-ranked Michigan (2-0) 4-0 Sunday afternoon at UM's Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan claimed an early 1-0 lead after earning a close doubles point. At the No. 2 position, State's junior duo of Jennifer Brown and Madison Harrison was ousted by Michigan's 29th-ranked tandem of Mira Ruder-Hook and Brienne Minor 6-1. MSU's fifth-ranked pair of Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux then fell to Michigan's fourth-ranked duo of Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian 6-4 at the No. 1 position in a close battle. Court 3 was suspended with MSU leading 5-4.
In singles action, MSU challenged the Wolverines throughout the lineup, extending three matches to a third set before Michigan finally secured the clinching point.
At the No. 2 singles position, MSU's Harrison fell to Michigan's 20th-ranked Fahey in straight-sets 6-1, 6-2, extending Michigan's lead 2-0. Finishing close behind on court 3, Bulldog Anastasia Rentouli was setback by the Wolverines' 60th-ranked Najarian 6-3, 6-2.
After rallying to split sets at No. 1, MSU's 27th-ranked Lee was held off by Michigan's 80th-ranked Minor 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in a tough three-set fight to clinch the team victory for the Wolverines.
The three remaining contests were suspended at that point. MSU's rookie Rioux led Michigan's 78th-ranked Chiara Lommer 6-3, 6-6(6-5) at No. 3, just one point shy of claiming a win. The final two matches, at No. 5 and 6, were both in the third set.
The Bulldogs return to action in two weeks. Back at the friendly confines of the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, State will host ULL on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. CT. It will be the first of four-straight home matches for the Bulldogs.
