MSU Women’s Tennis Completes Day One Of Furman Invite

GREENVILLE, S.C. – After the first day of play at the Furman Invite Friday, the Mississippi State women's tennis team is 5-1 in doubles play and 4-2 in singles in its first competition of the 2016-17 campaign.
"We competed extremely well today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Every match was a battle and I was impressed our girls were able to pull off some big wins. I feel like we played with an exceptionally high level of determination and courage especially considering it was our first day of competition of the year. We played great in doubles this morning and I think we carried some of that momentum into the afternoon singles matches."
Doubles play started off with the MSU tandem of senior Jasmine Lee and freshman Lisa Marie Rioux defeating North Carolina's Makenna Jones and Cassandra Vasquez 8-6. The State pair later upended Florida State's 57th-ranked Gabriella Castaneda and Julia Mikulski 8-4. The MSU duo will face Vanderbilt's Christina Rosca and Astra Sharma Saturday in the finals of Flight 1.
State's duo of freshman Sara Lizariturry and sophomore Anastasia Rentouli also finished the day undefeated to reach the title match in Flight 3. They ousted Florida State's Andrea Garcia and Daniela Schippers 8-5 and Wake Forest's Chandler Carter and Andrea Fernandez 8-4. They will take on Wake Forest's Courtney Meredith and Joanna Zalewski in Saturday's final.
MSU's tandem of juniors Jennifer Brown and Madison Harrison fell to UNC's Rachael James-Baker and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer 8-5 in their Flight 2 opener Friday. They rebounded by ousting Clemson's Constanza Gorches and Daniela Ruiz 8-1. Brown and Harrison will meet Wake Forest's Samantha Asch and Emma Davis on Saturday for the consolation crown.
The singles session proceeded after the doubles session was completed.
State's Lee, ranked eighth nationally, defeated FSU's Castaneda 7-6(4), 6-2 in her Flight 1 opener and will match up with Clemson's 46th-ranked Ayan Broomfield Saturday in the semifinals. In Flight 2, MSU's 84th-ranked Harrison rallied from a set down to down North Carolina's Ouellet-Pizer 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. She will face host Furman's Katty Weymouth on Saturday in the semis.
State's 75th-ranked Rentouli notched a straight-set win in Flight 3 over Seminole Nandini Das 6-2, 6-2. On Saturday, she is set to play Katarina Kozarov of host Furman. Also in Flight 3, the Bulldog newcomer Rioux fell in a tough three-set to Vanderbilt's Rosca 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-0. She will match up with Wake Forest's Anna Ulyashchenko Saturday in consolation play.
State's other freshman, Lizariturry, was able to outlast Clemson's Ruiz for a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 victory Friday in Flight 5. She will match up with Wake Forest's Zalewski in Saturday's semifinals. In Flight 6, MSU's Caroline Kelly fell to Tennessee's Kim Kermet 6-2, 6-0. She will face Furman's Karlee Bryde on Saturday.
