MSU Women’s Tennis Set To Open 2016 Fall Campaign
September 22, 2016 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Following one of the most successful seasons in program history, the Mississippi State women's tennis team travels to Greenville, S.C., this weekend to display its talent in the Furman Invite starting Friday, Sept. 23. The Maroon and White will meet up with players from Furman, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.
MSU enters the year after finishing the 2015-16 season ranked 23rd nationally and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championship for the second straight season.
"Our team is exited to play in their first event of the season," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "The competition will be very challenging, which is exactly what we need. This will be the only tournament of the fall where the whole team will compete. It will be a good bonding experience traveling together and supporting each other. I am excited to see how we compete in this first event."
Greenan enters his eighth year as head coach after leading the Bulldogs to their most Southeastern Conference wins in program history and the second-most overall wins in MSU history last spring.
Returning for the Maroon and White is senior Jasmine Lee who finished her junior season 32-12, ranked 11th in the country, and was named State's first-ever ITA Singles All-American. She is ranked a school-record eighth this preseason.
Also back are juniors Jennifer Brown, Madison Harrison and Kristina Vozniak who were all key components in helping the Bulldogs to their success last season. Brown was 17-10 overall while Harrison and Vozniak currently compose the nation's 16th-ranked doubles team after advancing to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Doubles Championship in May. Harrison is also ranked a career-high 84th nationally in singles entering 2016-17.
Also returning for the Bulldogs are sophomores Caroline Kelly and Anastasia Rentouli who combined for a 35-14 singles mark last year. Rentouli, ranked 75th in the preseason, set a school record for single-season winning percentage last year as a rookie with a 49-14 record (77.8%).
Two new faces joined the team over the summer in promising freshmen Sara Lizariturry and Lisa Marie Rioux.
The Bulldogs are set to start play this weekend at 9 a.m. ET Friday with doubles. State will then wrap up the day with singles action at 1 p.m. ET. Play will also be held on Saturday and Sunday.
