STARKVILLE, Miss. - With the fall state just around the corner for Mississippi State women's tennis, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its preseason national rankings Tuesday, with three Bulldog women's tennis players making appearances in the top 100 nationally in singles and one duo in the top 20 in doubles.
Senior Jasmine Lee, a 2016 ITA All-American and All-SEC First Team selection, came in at No. 8 in Tuesday's singles rankings, the highest mark during her already-impressive career as well as the highest ever for MSU women's tennis. Lee was ranked 11th at the end of the 2015-16 season, after posting a 32-12 record (second most single-season wins in program history), reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship, and becoming State's first-ever All-American in singles.
MSU sophomore Anastasia Rentouli is also ranked in the preseason, at 75th, after finishing the 2015-16 season ranked 105th after a stellar rookie campaign. As a newcomer last year, Rentouli posted a remarkable 17-5 dual match record in singles and set a new school record for single-season winning percentage with a 49-14 (77.8%) record overall in singles and doubles.
Junior Madison Harrison rounds out State's singles trio, coming in at a career-best 84th in the preseason rankings. Harrison closed out the 2015-16 season ranked 117th, after posting a 15-8 dual match record playing mainly at the No. 2 and 3 positions for the Bulldogs.
Harrison also teams up with junior Kristina Vozniak to compose the nation's 16th-ranked pair in Tuesday's doubles rankings. It marks the highest any Bulldog duo has been ranked since 2005. The juniors finished last season ranked 34th, after posting an 8-4 dual match record and reaching the Round of 16 of the NCAA Doubles Championship, only the second MSU duo ever to do so.
Both Lee and the duo of Harrison and Vozniak will represent MSU in the 2016 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships later this month in Pacific Palisades, Calif., in the main draws of singles and doubles, respectively. Lee will also pair up with newcomer Lisa Marie Rioux in the pre-qualifying round in doubles. Harrison and Rentouli received selections for the pre-qualifying round in singles.
State, which ended 2016 with the second-most wins in school history at 18-9 and reached the second round of the NCAA Championship for the second year in a row, opens its fall slate Sept. 23-25 at the Furman Invite.
