Soccer Hosts Louisiana-Lafayette For Senior Day
September 10, 2016 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In its last non-conference matchup of the season, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-3-0, 0-1-0 SEC) welcome the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (4-3-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
Sunday's contest will serve as MSU's Senior Day for Jamila Coner, Ari Holmes and Sarah Hulett.
The game will be broadcast on SEC Network +, with Anthony Craven and Robbie Kroger on the call. Fans can access the broadcast by going to WatchESPN.com. Live stats of the matchup will be available through HailState.com.
"We have a quick turnaround and we want to win Sunday's game for our seniors," head coach Aaron Gordon said. "We have three players who have given a lot to this program, in Mila, Ari and Sarah, and the game will be a chance for us to honor them. Louisiana-Lafayette is on a bit of a momentum swing so we know they'll be ready to play tomorrow so we will need to counter that with our own energy."
Last Time Out:
The Bulldogs and 25th-ranked Arkansas combined for seven goals in Friday night's SEC opener at the MSU Soccer Field, but the Razorbacks were too much for State in the second half as the Hogs prevailed 5-2. MSU had a 2-1 lead after Holmes scored her first goal as a Bulldog, but Arkansas countered with four unanswered scores to earn the victory.
Scouting Louisiana-Lafayette:
The Ragin' Cajuns come into Sunday's game with a 4-3-0 record after their 2-1 win against McNeese State on Friday night. ULL has won three-straight, allowing only one goal each time. Senior forward MacKenzie Higgins leads the team in goals, with seven on the season while adding one assist to combine for 15 points. She has scored at least one goal in the last three games for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Keys For MSU:
Before Friday's contest MSU was facing an Arkansas club that scored 17 goals on the season, Sunday's opponent will be even better coming into Sunday's bout as the Ragin' Cajuns have earned 21 scores this season. That number is inflated a bit after ULL scored 10 gaols in their shutout win against Alcorn State earlier in the year. The Bulldogs have allowed 10 goals this season, so key to the game on Sunday will be the play of MSU's defense and the ability to slow down the red-hot Ragin' Cajuns.
Up Next:
The Maroon and White caps its three-game homestand next Sunday as the Bulldogs hosts SEC-foe Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast by ESPNU and will be MSU's first appearance on the station since last season's road win against Alabama (10/25/15).
