McBride Punches Ticket To Rio Olympics
July 10, 2016 | Track & Field, Olympic Games
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Brandon McBride's Olympic dream became a reality on Sunday.
McBride became Canada's national champion in the 800 meters while also punching his ticket to next month's Rio Olympic Games.
The Windsor, Ontario, native led from start to finish at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, to win by nearly a second with a time of 1:45.25.
McBride will join teammate Marta Freitas in Rio.
Freitas, who clinched a spot in Rio for her native Portugal in the 1,500 meters, was also in action on Sunday at the European Championships in Amsterdam. Freitas finished fifth in the event, running a time of 4:34.41.
Erica Bougard's quest for Rio fell just short in the heptathlon at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
Bougard finished the event in seventh place with 6,070 points. She opened the day by landing 20-09.25 to win the long jump, but 19th- and 14th-place finishes in the javelin and 800m, respectively, dropped her to seventh.
