
Freitas Advances To Finals After Dominating 1500m Heat

EUGENE, Ore. – Marta Freitas never saw the back of anyone's uniform.
Leading start to finish in her heat at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, the senior from Lisbon, Portugal, posted a time of 4:15.52 in the 1500m run to set up Saturday's quest for a national championship.
Freitas, both the indoor and outdoor SEC winner, had several challengers throughout but held each one off en route to pulling away in dominating fashion down the stretch.
The finals at Hayward Field Saturday are set for 5:41 p.m. CT.
In other action, MSU didn't have another athlete advance to the finals.
In the 1500m run, Ffion Price just missed out at 4:15.75, while Erica Bougard came up short in both the 100m hurdles (13.09) and long jump (20-3.5).
Also seeing their seasons come to an end were Cornelia Griesche and Antonia Hehr in the 3000m steeplechase at 10:07.83 and 10:08.63, respectively.
Bougard will be back on the track tomorrow for the start of the heptathlon, while in men's action Brandon McBride (800m) and the 4x400m relay team of Justin Waters, Alfred Larry, McBride and Vince Castillo will be competing in the finals. Seth Peace will conclude men's competition with the high jump.
