McBride Places 2nd In 800m Run, Sets School Record
June 10, 2016 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Despite setting a school record with a time of 1:44.50, Brandon McBride's quest to win a second NCAA title in the 800m run came up just short Friday at the Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
In front of a sellout crowd 12,244 at historic Hayward Field, McBride held the lead after the first lap and heading into the final stretch. However, that's when SEC rival Donavan Brazier of Texas A&M made the pass en route to setting a collegiate record at 1:43.55.
As a team, MSU finished the meet 9th overall with 18 points. Florida won the overall men's crown with 62 points, while Arkansas was second with 56, followed by Texas A&M with 50.
It was the Bulldogs' second-straight year to finish in the Top 10 as they were 8th in 2015.
"I hate it for Brandon, because I know how much he wanted to win and how hard he has prepared," MSU coach Steve Dudley said of his senior All-American. "It's tough when you run your best time and come up just short. I told him to run for time. I didn't care about place. I wanted him to run the fastest could, so him not winning is on me. But I'm very proud of him. He is going to represent MSU really well in Rio."
In April, the heralded Windsor, Ontario, native posted the fastest time of the year worldwide when he ran 1:44.63 at the Jace LaCoste Invitational.
He'll now turn his attention toward the Olympic Trials for Team Canada.
To conclude the day, it appeared Bulldogs' 4x400 relay team of Vince Castillo, Alfred Larry, Dustin James II and Rasheed Tatham collected points after finishing fifth at 3:04.18. However, following a protest, MSU was disqualified.
Although he didn't score, Seth Peace finished tied for 18th in the high jump at 6-10.25.
In all, six SEC teams placed in the Top 10, with LSU fifth and Tennessee sixth.
The only women's activity of the day was the heptathlon, where All-America Erica Bougard is currently third after four events with 3,720 points, 231 behind leader Akela Jones of Kansas State.
In the 100m hurdles, Bougard ran 13.19 before leaping 5-11.25 in the high jump. After throwing 39-1 in the shot put, she posted a time of 24.03 in the 200m run. Saturday, she'll close out the heptathlon with the long jump, javelin and 800m run.
Saturday will also feature Marta Freitas in the 1500m run, while Bougard and Logan Boss will compete in the high jump. ESPN will provide coverage, beginning at 5:30 p.m. CT.
