Bougard Leaps Into NCAA Championships In Long Jump Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Erica Bougard qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump to lead the Mississippi State track and field teams in Thursday's opening day of the NCAA East Preliminary meet in Jacksonville, Florida.
Bougard punched her ticket to Eugene, Oregon, on her final leap, landing 20-09.25 to take fourth place.
The Byhalia, Mississippi, native, who qualified in the heptathlon by claiming her second-straight SEC title two weeks ago, attempts to earn a spot in the high jump and 100m hurdles finals on Friday.
Five other Bulldogs moved one step closer to earning a place in the June 8-11 championships on Thursday.
"We had some really solid performances to open this weekend's qualifying meet," Steve Dudley said. "We are proud of Erica for advancing in the long jump, and we had several athletes move one step closer to earning a trip to Eugene. I am hopeful we can have another good day on Friday."
Brandon McBride rolled into Friday's 800 meters quarterfinal, running an opening-round best 1:46.91.
Marta Freitas and Ffion Price both earned spots in Saturday's 1500m quarterfinal. Freitas, the national leader in the event, posted the day's best time with a 4:16.00, while Price took sixth in 4:18.84.
On the men's side, Vince Castillo advanced to Friday's 400m hurdles quarterfinal by taking third place in his heat with a season-best 50.74.
Alfred Larry moved one step closer to earning a place in Eugene in the 400 meters, advancing to Friday's quarterfinal with a ninth-place finish on Thursday (46.18).
The MSU track and field squads continue NCAA East Preliminary action Friday.
