STARKVILLE, Miss. - The 2006 baseball season continues for Mississippi State's Baseball Bulldogs, who on Monday were one of 34 at-large selections to the 64-team field of the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Mississippi State (35-21) is the No. 3 seed and will face No. 2 seed Elon (44-16) at 2 p.m. (CDT) in the opening round of the 2006 Clemson Regional in Clemson.S.C. Host Clemson (47-14), the top national seed in the NCAA Tournament, meets UNC-Asheville (28-33) at 6 p.m. (CDT) Friday.
Our kids are thrilled to get an opportunity for a second chance and are looking forward to playing in the NCAA Tournament, said Mississippi State head coach Ron Polk. We were somewhat of a snake-bit team this year, with some injuries and a lot of closes losses in the second half of the season.
MSU will be making its 29th advancement to NCAA postseason competition and its 10th in the last 11 seasons. Since the NCAA adopted its regional tournament format in 1975, Mississippi State has competed in 22, winning eight regional championships, advancing to two NCAA Super Regionals and six of the school's seven College World Series appearances.
Ron Polk, in his 33rd season as a collegiate head coach and his 27th at Mississippi State, has guided 21 teams to NCAA postseason play --- twice at Georgia Southern (1973 and 1974), once at Georgia (2001) and 18 times at Mississippi State (1978, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2004 and 2005).
After winning the 2005 SEC Baseball Tournament, Mississippi State competed in the 2005 NCAA Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional a year ago, taking runner-up honors behind the host Miami Hurricanes.
Ticket information and other regional tournament details will be announced by tournament host Clemson.
