STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State University has signed pitcher Greg Houston of Hoover, Ala., to a baseball scholarship, head baseball coach Ron Polk announced Monday.
Houston is a 6-2, 170-pound right-handed pitcher at Hoover (Ala.) High School, where he is coached by Rick Davis. As a senior in 2006 he has compiled a 5-2 record with a 2.45 earned run average and six complete-game pitching performances.
"What a fine student-athlete Greg Houston has become at Hoover High School," said coach Polk. "We are excited that this young man will be joining our university and baseball program in the fall semester. Greg will be a tremendous contributor to the university both in the classroom and on the baseball field."
Houston compiled an 8-3 record with a 2.80 earned run average as a junior at HHS last spring. He recorded 77 strikeouts in 70 innings, earning honorable mention all-state honors. Houston was also named to the "Over the Mountain" high school all-star team and was selected to participate in the 2005 Alabama high school coaches all-star weekend competition. At Hoover High School Houston is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The MSU signee attended South Forsyth High School in Cumming, Ga., where he competed in baseball and cross country prior to transferring to Hoover High School during the 2004-05 school year.
"Mississippi State is a great place to play baseball," said Houston. "It is one of the most unique settings for baseball in America. I've always dreamed of playing in the SEC, and Mississippi State is one of the best teams in the conference. I love the coaches, and to get a chance to play for Coach Polk is an honor."
Houston is the son of Scott and Susan Houston of Hoover, Ala.
