TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona scored five quick runs and held on to beat Mississippi State 7-3 on Saturday, the Bulldogs' second defeat in as many road games this season.
The Wildcats (14-5) scored once in the first inning, three times in the second and added another run in the third to give Mississippi State (8-2) its second straight defeat after eight wins to open the season.
Arizona pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts, led by closer Mark Melancon, who struck out the side in the ninth to seal his third save.
Brian LaNinfa had a two-run double in the fourth for Mississippi State. Joseph Hunter went 3-for-4.
