STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State travels to Baton Rouge, La., this weekend for its first true road test of the 2004 season as the 24th-ranked Bulldogs (13-6, 1-2 SEC) tackle the top-ranked LSU Tigers (19-3, 2-1 SEC) in a three-game set at Alex Box Stadium. The series opens Friday at 6:30 p.m.
It's the first out-of-state journey this season for the Diamond Dogs, who earlier this month were the designated visiting team against Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Monroe in the Enterg y Louisiana Series at Jackson's Smith-Wills Stadium.
MSU, which played 17 of its first 19 games this year at Dudy Noble Field, dropped a pair of nonconference games in the midweek, bowing to No. 30 Birmingham-Southern 10-1 and Samford 6-0 in Starkville.
Sophomore right-hander Jamie Gant (2-2, 2.59) will draw starting mound duty for the Bulldogs.
Mississippi State senior co-captain Steve Gendron (.354) enters the series riding a 10-game hitting streak. Gendron has registered seven of his team-leading 11 multi-hit games during the past 10 games, including two-hit performances in the two midweek games. The Tampa, Fla., product has climbed the MSU career hits charts and now ranks ninth all-time at MSU with 265.
The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and concludes with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
State returns to action at Dudy Noble Field Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. hosting the UAB Blazers.
