In his second consecutive 10-inning performance, Maholm scattered five hits, struck out six and held Arkansas scoreless in nine of his 10 innings en route to his seventh career complete-game performance. Maholm retired the first 10 batters he faced before running into diffiiculty in the fourth with an infield single, a walk and a two-out hit batsman. Ryan Fox then knotted the score at 3-3 with a bases-clearing double into the left field corner.
The Bulldogs jumped off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Razorback starter Charley Boyce on a pair of singles by Matthew Maniscalco and Matthew Brinson and an infield groundout by Brad Corley.
State threatened but left a runner stranded in scoring position the next two innings when Jon Mungle laced a one-out double to left in the second and Steve Gendron and Brinson delivered back-to-back singles in the third.
The Bulldogs opened the fourth with three singles off Boyce and plated a pair of runs for a 3-0 lead when Joseph Hunter was struck by a pitch and Maniscalco followed with an RBI fielder's choice groundout.
Scott Roehl replaced Boyce in the eighth and worked out of troubles in the eighth and ninth. But Brad Corley, Jeff Butts and Craig tatum opened the 10th with back-to-back singles and Mungle's fly ball to center field enabled Corley to beat Ryan Fox's throw from center field.
Maholm gave up a one-out single before retiring the No. 1 and No. 2 hitters in the Arkansas batting order to nail down the win. It was the second straight extra-inning performance for Maholm, who worked 10 innings but did not get the decision in State's 5-4, 13-inning win last Friday against Vanderbilt.
MSU out-hit the Razorbacks 14-5, with Steve Gendron leading the way with three singles and extending his hhitting streak to a career-best 12 games. All nine Bulldog starters had hits, including two each by Matthew Brinson, Craig Tatum and Jon Mungle.
The team's continue their weekend series Saturday at 2 p.m.
