Lady Dogs Fall 6-0 To No. 35 Lady Rebels
May 25, 2016 | Women's Tennis
The loss drops MSU to 5-15 overall and 1-10 in SEC play, while the 35th-ranked Lady Rebels improved to 11-9 and 4-7 in conference action with their 13-straight victory over MSU.
"We did not have the fight today that we had at Arkansas Sunday," head coach Tracy Lane said. "We put ourselves behind early with errors, and you can't do that against a team like Mississippi. I thought Elaine (Fagan) did a nice job coming back in the second set, but unfortunately, she just couldn't force the deciding set."
Sabrina Peppl took the opening set of her match with Fagan in convincing 6-2 fashion, but the Lady Bulldog from Dublin, Ireland, rallied from a two-game deficit to take a 6-5 lead. Peppl broke serve to force the tiebreak, and the Lady Rebel held off Fagan's furious rally to claim the set and the 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory.
UM's 12th-ranked Mira Radu put the Lady Rebs on top early as she knocked off State senior Carole Soubis 6-2, 6-1. Alesya Ignatieva followed closely behind at the No. 2 spot, as she held off freshman Magdolna Rekasi 6-4 in the opening set before sealing the win with a 6-2 second-set victory.
Audra Adams put UM a point away from the victory as she downed Yumi Ueda 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 position. The Lady Rebels won the match with Karem Harboe's hard-fought victory over Camila Sagae at the No. 3 spot. Sagae took the early first-set edge, but Harboe battled to win the opener 6-3 before rolling in the second to claim a 6-3, 6-2 win. Justyna Switala battled in the early-going as well, but she was unable to hold on as Florencia Basile claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win.
State returns to action Thursday, as the squad travels to Columbia, S.C., for the 2002 SEC Championship. State will most likely be the fifth seed out of the Western Division for the University of South Carolina-hosted tournament.
