MSU Lady Netters Close Road Trip With 7-0 Loss To UGa
May 25, 2016 | Women's Tennis
The loss drops State to 4-13, 0-8 in SEC play, while Georgia improved to 18-1 and a perfect 8-0 in conference play.
UGA started quickly by taking the doubles point, but it wasn't easily obtained as MSU fought hard despite having to default the No. 3 position. State's duo of senior Carole Soubis and sophomore Yumi Ueda forced the No. 1 position to be the deciding match with an 8-6 win over Anne Nguyen and Alexandra Smith.
State couldn't clinch the point, however, as Georgia's 11th-ranked tandem of Agata Cioroch and Lori Grey held off Magdolna Rekasi and Camila Sagae 8-4 to gain the early 1-0 advantage at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Head coach Tracy Lane's Lady Dogs fought hard in singles play, but they were unable to post any points on the scoreboard. Georgia went up 2-0 as the Lady Dogs were forced to default the No. 6 position.
Sophomore Justyna Switala played a tough first set against Alexandra Smith at the No. 5 spot, but the Opole, Poland, native dropped a 7-5 decision en route to a 7-5, 6-3 loss. Grey cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ueda at No. 4, and the home-standing Lady Bulldogs clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-0 win by Tina Hojnik over Rekasi at the No. 3 spot.
Nguyen, ranked 43rd nationally, had a tough battle with Sagae before managing to prevail 6-3, 6-4. Facing her second top-10 foe in as many matches, Soubis dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to eighth-rated Cioroch.
MSU returns home for its next action, entertaining SEC Western Division foe LSU Friday in a 2:30 p.m. dual match. The conference showdown at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre is part of a full slate of Super Bulldog Week activities that will be taking place on the MSU campus this week.
