May 25, 2016 | Women's Tennis
State dropped to 4-11, 0-6 in conference play, while Auburn continued its winning ways to improve to 9-4 and 3-2 in SEC action.
AU swept the opening doubles point, but the Lady Bulldogs didn't give up, taking four of the six singles matches to the full three sets.
State senior Carole Soubis rolled to an easy 6-1 win in the opening set of her match with Carolina Ramirez, but Ramirez rallied to win the second set 6-3 before taking the third and deciding set in tight 7-6 fashion.
Sarah Suitor and Liz Sauerborn extended the lead for Auburn with a pair of straight-set victories over State's Elaine Fagan and Yumi Ueda at the No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively. Suitor claimed the 6-4, 6-1 win over Fagan, and Sauerborn knocked off Ueda 6-4, 6-2.
The other four matches went the full three sets. State claimed its lone point at the No. 3 spot in a three-set battle. Freshman Magdolna Rekasi dropped the opening set of her match with Carolina Maurer, but the Budapest, Hungary, native responded to take the next two sets and the match by a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 mark.
The other pair of three-set affairs didn't fare as well for head coach Tracy Lane's squad. Camila Sagae dropped the opening set of her match with Petra Bercik at No. 2 6-3, but she answered by taking the second st before falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. In the No. 6 position, Justyna Switala fell 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to Martina Janska.
State opened the match strong, but the squad fell short in three hard-fought doubles battles to fall behind 1-0 early in the match.
Rekasi and Sagae fought a tough affair with Katia Illarionova and Maurer, but the Lady Tiger duo picked up a big break to hold on for an 8-6 win. Soubis and Ueda dropped an 8-4 decision to Ramirez and Bercik before sweeping doubles with an 8-5 win by Suitor and Sauerborn over Fagan and Switala.
The Lady Bulldogs take a week-long break before heading back on the road to conclude a four-match road trip. State will square-off against 10th-ranked Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., on Mar. 29 before matching up with top-ranked Georgia in Athens on Mar. 31.
