#69 Lady Dogs Drop 7-0 Decision to #20 Alabama
May 25, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Head coach Tracy Lane's Lady Dogs (4-10, 0-5 SEC) fell behind early to the Tide (10-3, 2-2 SEC) as they dropped the doubles point for the fifth consecutive outing. MSU avoided the doubles sweep at No. 2, as the tandem of senior Carole Soubis and sophomore Yumi Ueda outlasted Bama's Jenny Ketchum and Sophie Cremers in the tiebreak to claim the 9-8 win.
Alabama took a pair of 8-3 victories in the other two contests, however, to take the early 1-0 edge. UA's duo of Millie Begovic and Weyli Chang knocked off freshman Magdolna ekasi and Camila Sagae at No. 1 before Becca Baum and Selia Mathew defeated junior Elaine Fagan and sophomore Justyna Switala at the No. 3 spot.
Singles action did not fare any better for the Lady Dogs. Fresh off an upset win over 26th-ranked Carolina Mayorga last Sunday, Soubis dropped a tough 6-3, 6-3 decision to 114th-ranked Mathew.
Sagae dropped the opening set of her No. 2 position tilt with Ketchum, but she rallied in the second only to fall 7-5. Rekasi continued her struggles at the No. 3 position, falling 6-0, 6-3 to Begovic.
Cremers defeated Fagan 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, while Chang outlasted Ueda in an identical 6-1, 6-2 fashion. Switala could not build on the momentum of a key win Sunday against Kentucky, dropping a 6-3, 6-3 contest with Baum.
The Lady Bulldogs travel to the southern portion of Alabama for a showdown with Auburn on Sunday. Match time for the SEC contest is set for noon.
