April 27, 2016 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Adding to an already impressive season, the 21st-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team has landed two players on the 2016 All-Southeastern Conference team, the league announced Wednesday.
Leading State's honorees is junior Jasmine Lee, who earned All-SEC First Team laurels for the second year in a row. Joining her on the squad is senior Georgiana Patrasc who landed on the All-SEC Second Team, marking her third career All-SEC honor. Wednesday's release marks only the second time in program history that MSU has had two players named All-SEC in the same season.
For the season, Lee is 28-11 and 16-7 in dual match play (7-6 SEC), with all dual matches coming at the No. 1 position. Nineteen of Lee's wins have come against ranked foes, seven in the top 25. Lee has been a mainstay in the ITA National Rankings, reaching as high as No. 9 in singles (the highest by any MSU women's tennis player ever) and 43rd in doubles, where she is 15-9 overall. She currently stands at No. 14 in the country in singles and has been in the top 25 the entire year. The Kaohsiung, Taiwan, product, has qualified for every major college tournament that has been held since she arrived on campus in 2015 and will earn her second-straight selection to the NCAA Singles Championship next month.
Patrasc earned her All-SEC honor thanks to an extremely impressive senior campaign. The Bacau, Romania, native has posted a singles record of 27-7 in 2015-16 and is a remarkable 18-3 in dual match play this year. She posted the best conference record on the team, going 9-2 mainly at the No. 2 position in the powerful SEC. Patrasc established new career bests in the ITA Singles and Doubles Rankings in the past month and currently sits at No. 35 nationally in singles and No. 33 in doubles. She won eight-consecutive SEC matches at one point this spring (six vs. top 80 foes) and she is poised to earn her second career bid to the NCAA Singles Championship. Patrasc has amassed 152 total wins in her four-year Bulldog career, standing third all-time in the MSU record books. Her 90 singles wins have set a new school record.
“Jasmine and Georgiana both had spectacular seasons and are well deserving of these awards,” head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Jasmine proved once again to be among the best players in the country and is in a position to be one of the top 16 seeds at the NCAA Singles Championships. The top 16 seeds earn All-American status which would make her our first singles All-American in program history. Georgiana saved her best tennis for her senior year. She has been a strong leader and found a new level of competitiveness within herself. I am proud of these two and thankful for what they have contributed to this team. They played a major role in a very successful year so far for Bulldog Tennis!"
MSU's two All-SEC honorees and the remainder of the record-setting Bulldog women's tennis squad now wait to hear their 2016 NCAA Team Championship destination. The NCAA Women's Tennis Selection Show will air on Tuesday, May 3, at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com. The NCAA First and Second Rounds will be held May 13-15, with the finals being held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, May 19-24.
