No. 11 MSU Survives Marathon Match to Beat Louisiana-Monroe
April 21, 2016 | Baseball
BILOXI, Miss. – Jake Mangum's RBI-single in the bottom half of the 14th inning lifted the No. 11 Mississippi State baseball team to a 1-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe Wednesday night at MGM Park.
Playing for the first time at the new home of the Biloxi Shuckers, MSU (25-12-1) thrilled with what remained of the 4,472 in attendance by winning its longest game of the season. Louisiana-Monroe fell to 15-22.
“We used a bunch of arms that needed some work,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “We really didn't need to play 14 innings, but we got a lot of guys a lot of good work in pressure situations. You have a lot of games like this in the SEC, so it's good to be in these types of situations.”
In the 14th inning, Ryan Gridley had a one-out double. Gridley then took third base on a throwing error. After John Holland grounded out, Mangum laced an RBI single to right field to walk the game off for the Bulldogs.
“This is a big park and you really can't hit the ball in the air here,” Cohen said. “We did that too much in this game.”
MSU used nine pitchers. Keegan James (3-0) pitched the final inning to earn the win. Starter Zac Houston worked two innings. He was followed by Blake Smith, Kale Breaux, Ryan Cyr, Daniel Brown, Jacob Billingsley, Ethan Small, Paul Young and James.
Gridley was the lone multiple hitter for the Bulldogs, who finished with seven hits.
ULM had six hits and made the game's only error there in the 14th inning. Cade Stone and Anthony Herrera each had two hits for the Warhawks.
MSU returns to Southeastern Conference play this weekend with a critical series against No. 7 LSU at Alex Box Stadium. The Bulldogs and Tigers will meet at 7 p.m. Friday (SEC Network +), 6 p.m. Saturday (ESPNU) and noon Sunday (ESPN2).
