Thompson Breaks Javelin School Record
March 26, 2016 | Track & Field
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Inclement weather turned two days of competition into one, but moving action up a day was no problem for sophomore Curtis Thompson.
The sophomore standout threw 265-10 in the javelin Friday night at the Florida State Relays to claim first, while smashing the Mississippi State school record, as well as a facility record at the Mike Long Track.
He wasn't the only athlete who showed out on Friday, as the MSU track and field teams brought home a combined eight wins.
“We had to make adjustments due to weather, but I feel our athletes still came prepared to compete,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “We had a lot of good showings. It's always great to leave a meet with a broken school record and this many wins.”
Recording a personal-best 20.91 in the 200m dash, sophomore Rodrigo Rocha earned first in the event.
With a leap of 20-05.75, Erica Bougard brought home first place in the long jump, while Leah Lott finished fourth with a jump of 17-11. Bougard went on to earn first in the high jump as well after clearing 5-09.25. Immediately behind her in second was Logan Boss, who cleared 5-07.25.
In his first attempt in the outdoor 1500m run, Brandon McBride garnered first place in 3:46.19. Also placing in the Top 10 of the event was Andrew Monaghan in seventh with a time of 3:54.25.
Bringing home his first win of the outdoor season, junior Ro'Derick Spears captured first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.03. Willie Reed finished behind Spears in second with a time of 14.76, while Zachary Taylor earned fourth clocking a time 15.90. Jaquarius Wilson placed fifth at 15.96.
Freshman Vince Castillo earned his first outdoor win in the 400m hurdles. He posted a time of 52.20 to finish second in the event, first collegiately. Placing third in the event with a personal-best 53.30 was Dustin James II.
Another win for the Maroon and White was earned by the men's 4x400m relay. The foursome of Castillo, Juston Waters, Alfred Larry and Rasheed Tatham ran a time of 3:10.00 to earn the victory.
The men's 4x100m relay, made up of Lawrence Crawford, Rodrigo Rocha, Charles Taylor and Philip Smith, finished second after recording a time of 39.60.
Mia Meydrich recorded a second-place finish in the 1500m run after running a time of 4:29.50. Following Meydrich in fourth was Shannon Fair with a time of 4:37.60.
In the field for the Bulldogs, Seth Peace cleared 6-09 in the high jump to finish second in the event.
Clutching second and third place in the men's 400m dash was Juston Waters (46.79) and Rasheed Tatham (47.72). On the women's side, Kimari Martin also placed second with a time of 54.77.
Throwing a personal-best in the shot put, Haley Reynolds finished third after a toss of 46-02.50. Her throw is the fourth-best in program history.
