Grant, Ross Pace MSU On Day One At The Lone Star Invitational
March 22, 2016 | Men's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Playing in the shadows of The Alamo, the Mississippi State men's golf shot a two round total of 606 on day one of the Lone Star Invitational, standing in sixth place heading into Tuesday's final round.
“We played a course today where it really demanded good course management because the greens were extremely firm,” MSU coach Clay Homan said, “With the way the course is playing, leaving the ball on the proper side of the hole is really the key to scoring here. If we can do that and avoid short-siding ourselves, we can put up a good round tomorrow.”
Sophomore Taylor Grant shot a 36-hole five-over-par 149, tying him for 16th. Grant sits nine shots off Ohio State's Tee-k Kelly for the tournament lead.
Joining Grant in the Top 25, Jacob Ross carded a 150 to place him in a tie for 24th for the start of the third round.
Ben Wood shot identical rounds of 77 to turn in a scorecard of 154, tying him for 40th position.
In his first team appearance of the season, Taylor Bibbs shot a 155, landing the sophomore in a tie for 46th.
Rounding out the Bulldog scorecard, Ross Bell finished the day in a tie for 61st after shooting a 157.
“Taylor Grant and Jacob Ross continue to give us consistent play. We just need a little more of that throughout the lineup,” Homan said.
50th-ranked New Mexico leads the team championship with a score of three-over-par.
The Maroon and White tee it up for the third and final round Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. CT.
