Bulldog Trio In Top 25 At The Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate
February 23, 2016 | Men's Golf
MOBILE, ALA – Led by a trio of top 25 finishes, the Mississippi State men's golf team posted a 581, five-over par to place in eighth place heading into Tuesday's final round.
“I thought we had a pretty good day in the fact that we hit lots of greens. However with the greens being very receptive, we weren't able to convert all those opportunities into enough birdies,” MSU coach Clay Homan said.
After birdieing twice on the back nine, Ben Follet-Smith jumped into a tie for 11th place with 36-hole total of 143, one-under par to lead the Bulldogs after the first day of play.
Making his Bulldog debut, Jacob Ross carded an even-par 144 for the day, tying him for 18th. Completing the MSU trifecta in the top 25, freshman Ross Bell heads into Tuesday tied for 23rd after shooting 145, one-over par.
Senior Ben Wood carded a 149 for the day placing him in a tie for 46th.
Rounding out the MSU scorecard, freshmen Severin Soller shot a 165 to land him in 75th place.
“I thought Jacob Ross Played with tremendous consistency for the first tournament as a Bulldog,” Homan said. “We got some good play from Ben Follett-Smith and Ross Bell.”
MSU had three participants in the USA Individual Tournament, which was held simultaneously with the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate.
Taylor Grant finished the highest of the trio, shooting 144 tying for fifth, Taylor Bibbs shot a 148 to tie for 15th in his season debut.
Junior Jackson Dick rounded out the three Bulldog individuals, shooting a 152 to tie for 21st.
Led by Individual leader Michael Johnson, Auburn holds the 36-hole lead over second place Chattanooga.
The Maroon and White tee it up for the final round on Tuesday at 8:30 am.
