MSU Women's Tennis No. 26; Three Bulldogs In ITA Singles Rankings
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its most recent national rankings on Wednesday, with State's team climbing three spots to No. 26, three Bulldog women's tennis players in the singles rankings and two State duos ranked in the doubles top 55.
As a team the Bulldogs' rise to No. 26 came after posting three impressive top 65 wins and being crowned champion of the Courtside Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. The No. 26 mark is State's highest since May of 2005 when the Bulldogs were also No. 26 nationally. Among those three wins were shutouts of No. 36 Florida State and No. 41 DePaul. State is now 5-1 on the season and will return back to action against on Feb. 19 against UAB in Birmingham, Ala.
Leading the Bulldogs in the singles rankings Wednesday junior standout Jasmine Lee who improved four positions to No. 9 nationally after posting a combined 4-0 singles and doubles record at the Courtside Classic. She was also honored as the Most Valuable Player of the event and only relinquished six combined games to her opponents. Lee's No. 9 ranking is the highest attained by any MSU women's player ever, bettering her own ranking of 13th which was the previous best.
MSU rookie Anastasia Rentouli remained in the country's top 40 at No. 37 after posting a 2-0 singles record over the weekend to extend her career record to 16-2. Making her first appearance in the rankings was sophomore transfer Madison Harrison, who came in at No. 123 after defeating a top 90 opponent this past weekend, marking her 12th career singles win.
In doubles, the State tandem of Jennifer Brown and Kristina Vozniak advanced six spots to No. 47, compiling a 2-1 dual match record. A new MSU tandem also entered the rankings Wednesday, as Harrison and senior Georgiana Patrasc were No. 51 after defeating a top 40 duo at the Courtside Classic, extending their record to 4-1 in dual match play.
This is the first time in school history that six MSU women's tennis players have been in the ITA rankings at the same time.
“It is exciting to see some of the rankings we have earned so far this season,” head coach Daryl Greenan said. “We had a solid fall and are off to a strong start in dual match play this spring. Having so many of our players in the rankings, led by Jasmine Lee at No. 9 nationally, shows the positive direction our program is moving in. We have a focused and hard working group of girls, who also happen to be fun to coach. I am excited to see their progress and what else they will accomplish this season.”
