December 15, 2016 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – With another spring season fast approaching, the Mississippi State women's tennis team and head coach Daryl Greenan announced their 2017 schedule after posting one of the program's most successful finishes ever in 2016.
MSU faces a tough non-conference schedule while the always-tough SEC schedule will showcase 10 NCAA Tournament teams from last season with MSU hosting six conference foes at the A.J. Pitts Centre during the spring.
The 2017 season will begin with an individual competition, as the Bulldogs travel to Fort Worth, Texas, for the TCU Invitational Jan. 13-15. The following weekend, MSU returns to Starkville to host UAB for the first home dual match of the spring slate.
The Maroon and White hit the road again for the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., where they will face Syracuse on Jan. 28 and the winner of host Michigan and Denver on Jan. 29. All three of squads were 2016 NCAA Tournament teams. The Bulldogs then return home for a four-match home stretch before traveling to Georgia State to finish out the non-conference slate.
State will open 2017 SEC play at home on Friday, March 3, against Auburn and Alabama on Sunday, March 5.
The rest of MSU's home conference matches include Missouri (March 17), Arkansas (March 19), Texas A&M (March 31) and LSU (April 2).
On the road in the league, State travels to Vanderbilt (March 10), Kentucky (March 12), Tennessee (March 24), Georgia (March 26), South Carolina (April 7), Florida (April 9) and Ole Miss (April 15) to close out the regular season.
Postseason action will begin April 19-23, as the Bulldogs compete in the 2017 SEC Championship in Nashville, Tenn. The opening two rounds of the NCAA Championship will take place May 12-14 at various sites across the country. If the Bulldogs should advance to the program's first Round of 16 appearance, MSU will make the trip to Athens, Ga., for the final rounds of the NCAA Championship beginning on Thursday, May 18, with the NCAA Individual Championships commencing on Wednesday, May 24.
"We are excited about the 2017 spring season," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "The challenging schedule will provide us with the opportunities to carry the momentum our program built last year. We have a talented mix of veterans and newcomers who are extremely dedicated and competitive, and I look forward to going to battle with them.
The Bulldogs finished 2016 ranked 23rd in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings. MSU was a mainstay in the top 25 last season with its highest ranking coming at 21st three times, which was the second-highest ranking in program history. State reached the NCAA Second Round as a team for the second consecutive year and fifth time all-time.
Guided by Greenan, MSU went 18-9 for the year, its second-most single-season triumphs ever. State also finished 7-6 in the powerful Southeastern Conference (the seven wins were a program best) and reached the quarterfinals of the SEC Championship for the second year in a row. Of the Bulldogs' 18 wins, 13 came against ranked opponents, highlighted by a 4-3 upset of 15th-ranked LSU in Baton Rouge on March 13. That win was the highest ranked opponent MSU had ever defeated on the road. All nine of State's setbacks during the campaign were to teams in the final top 20.
Individually, State saw its first singles ITA All-American named as junior Jasmine Lee earned a 9-16 seed in the 2016 NCAA Singles Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Georgiana Patrasc also represented State in NCAA singles competition, while the Bulldog duo of Madison Harrison and Kristina Vozniak competed for MSU in doubles, reaching the round of 16.
State ended 2015-16 with a school-record five players in the final ITA national individual rankings. Lee led the group in singles at No. 11, 12 spots higher than any State player has ever finished a season.
