November 05, 2016 | Men's Tennis
FLUSHING, N.Y.– A valiant effort against the nation's top-ranked singles player was not enough on Saturday as Mississippi State men's tennis sophomore Nuno Borges fell in a tough three-set battle to end his run at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship.
The 43rd-ranked Bulldog fell, 6-4, 6(6)-7, 6-0, to No. 1 Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State as the Buckeye advanced to Sunday's final. Torpegaard will face Michael Redlicki of Arkansas in the National Indoor Championship match.
"I'm extremely proud of Nuno and all he's accomplished this fall," head coach Matt Roberts said. "He's played incredible and this is only the beginning for him. The National Indoor Championship was a great learning experience for Nuno and he's going to use this to develop his game into the spring."
On Friday Borges became the first MSU singles player to advance past the quarterfinals of the National Indoor Championship. Borges has complied a 12-3 record in his first fall campaign as a Bulldog, while posting a 6-2 mark against ITA ranked foes this fall.
