PENSACOLA, Fla. – Members of the Mississippi State men's tennis team posted four singles wins on the opening day of play at the Pensacola Futures, to cap a stellar day of action from the Roger Scott Tennis Center.

The sophomore quartet of Nuno Borges, Niclas Braun, Trevor Foshey and Strahinja Rakic all competed on Friday as each Bulldog earned a victory to open the singles qualifying draw. It was Braun and Rakic however, that turned in the biggest wins on Friday as the pair defeated ATP ranked foes.

Braun knocked off 13th-seeded and 57th-ranked Ryan Peniston, of Memphis, 6-0, 6-1, while Rakic rebounded from an opening set loss to claim the next two, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5, against Washington's Jake Douglas. Braun's opponent, Peniston, owns a 1647 ranking in the ATP, with Rakic's challenger, Douglas, holding a 1854 ranking.

Borges and Foshey rounded out the singles wins for MSU on Friday, as each Bulldog earned a straight-set victory. Borges cruised past Stetson's John Garner Horoz, 6-1, 6-0, while Foshey defeated Robert Kurek, 6-1, 6-3.

"Today was a great day for the Bulldogs," head coach Matt Roberts said. "All four guys played at a high level and it showed with the results on the court. I'm especially proud with how Nic and Strale played against their ranked opponents, they each dug deep and performed exceptionally well."

All four Bulldogs will be in action on Saturday in the second round of singles qualifying.

After concluding play in Pensacola, the Bulldogs will turn their full attention to the spring slate as MSU prepares for its season opener against Pepperdine on Jan. 20, 2017 in Malibu, Calif.
