November 02, 2016 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Almost three weeks removed from his regional championship, Mississippi State men's tennis sophomore Nuno Borges prepares to take his game to the national stage as the Bulldog competes at the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship, beginning on Thursday.
The tournament serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia University, the prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles draw for men and women. The tournament will be held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with first round action beginning on Thursday.
"We're excited for Nuno and I know he's ready to represent Mississippi State well in New York," head coach Matt Roberts said. "This is a great opportunity for Nuno and the tournament will be a chance for him to test his skills against the best competition in the nation."
The 43rd-ranked Bulldog begins the tournament as the fourth seed as he takes on Oliver Frank of Azusa Pacific on Thursday at 1:45 p.m. CT. Borges' opponent, Frank, earned his ticket to New York after claiming the ITA Division II national singles title and the Oracle Cup back in October.
Borges has earned a 9-2 mark in his first fall action as a Bulldog as he currently holds a six-match win streak on the singles court. The sophomore has also posted a 4-1 record against ITA ranked foes this fall.
If Borges should win on Thursday, he will face the winner of No. 13 Florian Lakat of California and No. 95 Jolan Cailleau of Texas Tech in Friday's second round match.
Up Next
While Borges competes in New York, the rest of the Bulldogs travel to Tuscaloosa for the SEC Invite on Nov. 4-Nov. 6.
