FLUSHING, N.Y.– In his first match at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship, Mississippi State men's tennis sophomore Nuno Borges cruised to a straight-set victory to move on to Friday's second round at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Borges defeated Oliver Frank of Azusa Pacific, 6-1, 6-2 as he advanced with ease on Thursday.
"Today was a great match for Nuno, he applied his game plan well and it showed in the form of a solid win," head coach Matt Roberts said. "We're looking forward to watching Nuno's game progress and develop over the course of the tournament."
The 43rd-ranked Bulldog will face No. 13 Florian Lakat of California on Friday. Lakat downed No. 95 Jolan Cailleau of Texas Tech, 6-3, 6-3.
The tournament serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia University, the prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles draw for men and women.
Borges has earned a 10-2 mark in his first fall action as a Bulldog as he currently holds a seven-match win streak on the singles court. The sophomore has also posted a 4-1 record against ITA ranked foes this fall.
