Bulldogs Move On To Consolation Play At ITA All-American

TULSA, Okla. – On the first day of main draw action, the Mississippi State men's tennis team gave relentless effort but couldn't advance into the next round of the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

The Bulldogs competed in two singles and two doubles matches on Thursday, as play kicked off in the main draw from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

First up for the Maroon and White was No. 26 Mate Cutura. The senior fought No. 8 Petros Chrysochos of Wake Forest, but couldn't overcome the Demon Deacon as Cutura fell, 6-4, 6-4. In the final singles match for MSU on Thursday, 43-ranked Nuno Borges also faced a Wake Forest foe as he took on No. 7 Skander Mansouri. The Bulldog pushed the 5th-seeded player but fell, 6-3, 6-4.

In Doubles play No. 19 Cutura and Vaughn Hunter squared off against New Mexico's 15th-ranked pair of Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen. New Mexico's duo took the match, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to Friday's round of 16. The final doubles match was an upset bid that just fell short for Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey as the duo pushed No. 11 Luca Corintelli and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of Virginia to three sets. The Bulldogs dropped the tough contest, 6-7(4), 7-5, 1-0 (5).

With main draw action concluded for MSU the Bulldogs will focus on consolation play at the ITA All-American. Cutura and Borges are set to begin their singles consolation bracket at noon tomorrow while the tandems of Cutura and Hunter along with Braun and Foshey will start doubles consolation at 3 p.m. CT.
