Borges Moves On At ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – Mississippi State men's tennis sophomore Nuno Borges won his first match at the ITA All-American Championships, as the Bulldog advanced past the first round of main draw consolation action on Friday.
The Bulldogs competed in two singles and two doubles matches on Friday, as play kicked off in the main draw consolation from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
First up for the Maroon and White was No. 26 Mate Cutura. The senior won the opening set against Northwestern's 44th-ranked Strong Kirchheimer, 6-4, but couldn't hold off the Wildcat as he dropped the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3.
In the final singles match for MSU on Friday, 43rd-ranked Nuno Borges defeated Columbia's No. 113 Victor Pham, 6-1, 6-4. The Bulldog will face Kentucky's Ryotaro Matsumura at 10:30 a.m. CT on Saturday in round of 16 action. The win was Borges' first singles victory at the ITA All-American.
In doubles play No. 19 Cutura and Vaughn Hunter took on Stanford's 23rd-ranked pair of Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski. The Bulldog duo fell to the Cardinal ranked team in a spirited match, 6-3, 7-5. Qualifiers Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey were MSU's last contest of the day, as the pair faced the familiar Texas A&M duo of No. 20 Max Lunkin and Arthur Rinderknech. Braun and Foshey pushed the pair in the opening set, but couldn't regain an advantage as the Bulldogs fell, 7-5, 6-0.

Borges will continue consolation play in Tulsa, while MSU's next play date will be in Houston, Texas for a USTA Futures event. Sophomore Strahinja Rakic is set to begin action on Saturday in singles play.
