Bulldogs Save Best Round For Last In Cougar Classic
October 04, 2016 | Women's Golf
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Improving each day is what Mississippi State women's golf coach Ginger Brown-Lemm expected of her squad in the Cougar Classic this week, and that's exactly what the Bulldogs did, firing a final-round 291 to finish tied for 14th overall.
MSU shaved three strokes off its second round to move up two spots into the Top 15.
"We are definitely learning a lot out there. Our freshman Athena Yang had two solid 73s and, with the exception of two holes, played very solid today as well. Teri Doss had two solid rounds and really helped the team. Katie Holt came through for us in a big way with two rounds of 74 and 72," Brown-Lemm said. "We played better each day, and when Jessica (Peng) and JB (Ji Eun Baik) played closer to normal, we were able to post better numbers. There are lots of positives to take away from our second event."
Seniors Peng and Baik returned to the top of the Bulldog scoring cards Tuesday as they both turned in 71s. Peng rounded out the back nine holes at 2-under, while Baik finished her final nine holes 1-under. Peng ended the three-day event tied for 34th at 219. Baik tallied a 221 and tied for 50th.
After a pair of 73's in her first two rounds, Athena Yang notched a final-round 77 to bring her total to a 223 and tie for 62nd. Fellow freshman Teri Doss carded an 83 Tuesday, ending her second colligate tournament in 98th with a 232.
Katie Holt made MSU's biggest leap on Tuesday, firing four birdies Tuesday to shave six strokes off of her second round. Holt finished her third round with a 72 and wrapped the tournament tied for 70th with a 224.
MSU takes a weekend off before heading to North Carolina for the Greenville Preview Oct. 17-18.
