SAN ANTONIO, TX – A hot start led Mississippi State senior Ji Eun Baik to second place and the Bulldogs to the top spot after Sunday's opening round of the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
A birdie at hole No. 1 sparked a 3-under front nine for Baik. She went on to add another birdie on the back nine to head into the clubhouse three shots back of leader Alana Uriell of Arkansas with a 4-under 68, the third-lowest round of her career.
Baik and her teammates led MSU to its best round of the season, a 4-under 284 and a one shot lead over Tennessee heading into Monday's second round.
"It feels great to play an awesome round. I told myself to relax and have fun, which helped me shoot a 68," Baik said. " I will continue telling myself that the rest of the week, and I want to just take it one shot at a time."
Fellow senior Jessica Peng and freshman Teri Doss were also key to MSU grabbing the early lead, as each carded a 70 to tie for fifth place.
Peng ended her day with a pair of birdies on the final two holes, while Doss racked up three birdies on the first nine and one on the back.
Sophomore Katie Holt and freshman Athena Yang each turned in a 76 to end Sunday tied for 44th.
Kendall Wisenbaker played as an individual in Sunday's first round, shooting a 79 that tied her for 66th position.
The Bulldogs seek to defend the lead when second-round action tees off on Monday.
