TULSA, Okla. – In a three-set thriller, the Mississippi State men's tennis team earned its second doubles tandem in Thursday's ITA All-American Championships main draw as the sophomore duo of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey advanced past the qualifying doubles bracket.
The win for Braun and Foshey was their third doubles victory at the ITA All-American as the pair downed Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson of Memphis, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10). The State tandem now joins 19th-ranked Mate Cutura and Vaughn Hunter as MSU's representatives in the doubles main draw.
"I am very proud of the performance Nic and Trevor gave today," head coach Matt Roberts said. "Today's match was a battle and they dug deep to win the third set against Peniston and Watson. All six of our guys have done such a great job so far in Tulsa and have grown tremendously. We can't wait to get back out on the court Thursday to continue our growth and development as a team."
The team of Braun and Foshey has three career-doubles victories together, with all three wins coming at this year's ITA All-American.
MSU had three other matches on Tuesday, as two singles contests opened the morning of qualifying play. Braun began the day against 65th-ranked Herkko Pollanen of Ohio State, but the sophomore fell in the second round, 6-3, 6-3.
Hunter was next up in singles action at Tulsa, as the senior took on 68th-ranked Mitch Stewart of Washington. The Bulldog pushed the ranked Huskie to three sets, but couldn't overcome Stewart as Hunter dropped a hard-fought match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles action the Bulldogs had two teams in Tuesday's round of 16, as Borges and Rakic along with Braun and Foshey secured a chance for a main draw ticket with their stellar play on Monday. In the first doubles match, Borges and Rakic fell to Purdue's Gergely Madarasz and Ricardo Medinilla, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (6), while Braun and Foshey downed Peniston and Watson in the final MSU match on Tuesday.
