AUBURN, Ala. – Sophomore and 43rd-ranked Nuno Borges ousted No. 66 Constantin Schmitz of Tulane, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, to claim the ITA Southern Regional singles crown on Monday, officially punching his ticket to the prestigious National Indoor Championships on Nov. 3 in Flushing, N.Y.
The victory for Borges marked his first collegiate title as a Bulldog, while the six wins over the weekend improved his fall record to 9-2 overall this season.
"I'm proud of Nuno and happy to see all of his work and dedication pay off today," head coach Matt Roberts said. "Nuno has come a long way since joining our team in January and it's amazing to think he's only been with us for a short time but has improved so much. The opportunity he'll have in November is one of the reasons he came to MSU, because we focus on developing our players and getting them to the next level."
The 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia University, the prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles draw for men and women. The tournament will be held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center from Nov. 3-6.
Borges is the first Bulldog to win the ITA Southern Regional singles championship since Malte Stropp in 2013. The Porto, Portugal native is just the fifth Bulldog to win the singles title at the regional tournament in MSU's history.
On the doubles side, MSU had a chance to sweep the singles and doubles championships as the duo of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey faced Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton of Ole Miss on Monday. The Bulldog pair took the first set from the Rebels, 7-5, but fell in the next two, 2-6, 4-10, as Fallert/Hamilton took the win.
"I'm also proud of the effort and fight Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey showed this weekend," Roberts said. "They've been playing at a high level this fall and I look forward to watching their growth into the spring."
The Bulldog pair downed four doubles teams, two ranked, to continue their impressive fall run. The duo is the first MSU tandem to earn ITA Southern Region finalists status since doubles team Florian Lakat and Julian Cash won in 2014.
Up Next
The Bulldogs will have a trio of events coming up in the next couple of weeks, beginning with the Birmingham USTA Futures on Oct. 28, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships on Nov. 3 and the SEC Invite on Nov. 4.
